I tried to represent here in an ironic way a
scene which I witnessed in the 60’s in a pub in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
This place is a well-known local institution : it is said that Graham
Greene was living in a cockroach-infested room on the floor above the bar
in 1942-43 and he locates there the overture of his famous novel “ The
heart of the matter”. The bar has always been a meeting-place for the
expatriates at the end of the workday and no doubt Graham Greene had
himself one day or the other been in the position of that man solicited by
the elegant African lady…
A special medium has been utilised to create thicknesses inside of the dark lines around the different elements of the scene, in order to give a stained-glass effect.

J’ai tenté de représenter ici de façon
ironique une scène que j’ai pu observer dans les années 60 dans un bar
de Freetown, Sierra Leone. Ce lieu est une institution locale : on
dit que Graham Greene habitait dans une chambre au-dessus de ce bar dans
les années 1942-43 et c’est là qu’il situe l’ouverture de son
roman « Le fond du problème ». Le bar était très fréquenté
par les expatriés à l’heure de l’apéritif et nul doute que Graham
Greene s’est lui-même trouvé un jour ou l'autre dans la situation du
personnage sollicité par l’élégante africaine …
Un médium spécial a été utilisé pour créer des empâtements à l’intérieur des lignes sombres qui cloisonnent les différents éléments représentés à la manière d’un vitrail.
