STATUETTE TEMNE - TEMNE STATUE

ref CG 129

Huile sur toile - Oil on canvas

61 x 50 cms

The Temne people are present in the North-West part of Sierra-Leone and constitute the second most important ethnic group of the country. Contrary to the Mende, they are  not known for their art.

Nevertheless, the wooden statue reproduced here (which belongs to a private collection)  is remarkable in more than one way. The representation of the woman with her head tilted and her sexual attributes in the middle of her back is certainly a unique sample, and this explains why I painted it from two angles as if in a mirror. No doubt Picasso would have been very interested by this feminine figure showing, as did one "Demoiselle d'Avignon", her face and her back at the same time.

The signification and the role of the statue, as I gathered it on location, is no less interesting : a wife suspected of adultery would be summoned by the chief of the village and confronted with the statue in an ordeal – she then could not speak anything but the truth, otherwise she and the village people believed she would be instantly stricken dead as if by magic.
